DETAILS:

This weekly art workshop, for multicultural women living in South Canberra, continues in 2024. The class is an inclusive and welcoming space for women to meet, exchange ideas and create art together.

During the sessions participants have the opportunity to connect with others while learning and sharing creative experiences. The program is designed primarily based around drawing and painting, with the addition of different mediums according to the interests of group members.

This space is led by Yamile Tafur, an artist and educator from Colombia and now based in Canberra. Yamile’s field of interests include everyday occupations, manual labour, and ways of belonging. Drawing, painting and making community projects are an important part of her practice. She is also heavily involved in completing large-scale murals around Canberra.

Last year, the group met between October and December, gathering every Friday morning to share ideas and creative endeavours. The space was full of new knowledge and discoveries, as the group worked together depicting flowers to decorate the windows of the Woden Council building.

These images show some of the different drawing exercises the group worked on and the final outcome. During the creative process, participants shared stories about their treasures and knowledge, reflected on the meaning and the role of the multicultural women in Australia and discussed public art as part of a consultation process for a mural.
